Manchester City secured an important 2–1 victory over Real Madrid on Wednesday night at the Santiago Bernabéu in a dramatic Champions League encounter filled with attacking football, late first-half drama, and constant pressure from both sides.
After a long-awaited reunion between two of Europe’s biggest clubs, Real Madrid and Manchester City once again faced each other under the lights of the Bernabéu. Real Madrid started with a 4-3-3 formation, while Manchester City lined up in a 4-3-2-1 system led by Erling Haaland.
One of the main talking points before kickoff was the absence of Kylian Mbappé from the starting lineup, although the French star was still included in the squad. Manchester City, meanwhile, entered the match with most of their key players available, including top scorer Haaland.
The first half began with strong attacking intensity from Real Madrid. Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo immediately looked dangerous, combining well and creating several opportunities in the opening stages.
Real Madrid’s pressure finally paid off in the 28th minute when Rodrygo found the back of the net following an excellent assist from Bellingham. The goal marked Rodrygo’s first in several matches and gave the Bernabéu crowd a huge boost.

However, Manchester City responded quickly and aggressively after falling behind. Their attacking rhythm increased dramatically in the final minutes of the first half, creating serious problems for Madrid’s defense.
In the 36th minute, Nico O’Reilly equalized for Manchester City with an impressive finish that silenced the home crowd. Soon after, City were awarded a penalty following a VAR review, and Erling Haaland calmly converted from the spot to complete the comeback before halftime.
The second half was dominated by relentless pressure from Real Madrid. Xabi Alonso introduced Endrick in an attempt to increase the team’s attacking energy, and the Brazilian immediately looked lively alongside Vinicius Jr.
Real Madrid pushed forward continuously, recording numerous attempts throughout the second half. Vinicius Jr. and Bellingham both came close multiple times as Madrid searched desperately for an equalizer.
Despite the pressure, Manchester City’s defense remained composed and disciplined. With Real Madrid missing several important defensive players due to injuries, it became increasingly difficult for the hosts to break through City’s organized structure.
Pep Guardiola’s side eventually focused on controlling possession and protecting their lead, making defensive substitutions as the match progressed. Haaland, Phil Foden, Doku, and Cherki were all substituted later in the game as City prioritized defensive stability.
Real Madrid continued fighting until the final minutes, but Manchester City successfully held onto their advantage to secure a deserved victory away from home.
The result allows Manchester City to continue their impressive winning streak and move further ahead in the standings, while Real Madrid drop to seventh place. For Xabi Alonso and his squad, injuries and defensive absences continue to create major challenges, increasing the pressure ahead of the upcoming fixtures.
Although the defeat was frustrating for the Bernabéu crowd, Real Madrid still have plenty left to fight for this season, with their journey in both domestic and European competitions far from over.
